The 10th National Assembly's new president is Senator Godswill Akpabio.
He easily defeated Senator Abdul'aziz Yari on Tuesday to become the new Senate President.
After defeating Senator Yari, who received 46 votes, the former governor of Akwa Ibom was re-elected as president of the 10th Senate.
Since Nigeria's independence in 1960, Akpabio is the first person from the South to be elected President of the Senate.
Following Senator Ahmad Lawan, who is also a member of the 10th Senate, Senator Akpabio was sworn in as the President of the Senate for the 10th National Assembly.
Senator Jibrin Barau, who represents the Kano North Senatorial District, won the Senate election with no opposition.
Voting had already started at the Red Chamber in Abuja, Nigeria.

Voting was over at precisely 9:15 am.
At precisely 9:44 a.m., Akpabio was sworn in.
Senators Yari and Akpabio's nominations were received, and the Clerk of the Senate then declared the nomination process ended in the lack of any new nominations.
The candidates were former Akwa Ibom State governor Akpabio and former Niger Delta Minister Yari, a former governor of Zamfara State.
